Bundaberg is a community built on collaboration, and inclusivity is at the heart of its growth. In a recent Partner Up Podcast episode, Cirsty Murphy from IWC Bundaberg shared her journey, her passion for the disability sector, and the power of partnerships that make a difference in people’s lives.
A Career Rooted in Passion
Kirsty’s career in the disability community spans over 15 years, beginning as a support worker in her 20s. During this time, she has witnessed transformative changes, from the government’s pre-NDIS block funding system to the current client-focused NDIS model.
Cirsty has been involved in every stage of this evolution—rolling out the NDIS, improving service delivery, and building partnerships that strengthen community support.
“I’ve been here, there, and everywhere in the disability community,” Cirsty reflected. “I’ve seen a lot of positive changes and identified areas where we can work together to make even greater strides.”
Reviving the All Abilities Alliance
A key milestone in Kirsty’s career has been her work to revive the All Abilities Alliance (AAA). This grassroots group unites providers, community organisations, and individuals to collaborate on removing barriers and creating opportunities for people with disabilities.
“When we revamped the Alliance, it was about going back to basics—working together to remove barriers and provide opportunities for people with disabilities,” Cirsty explained.
The AAA serves as a vital hub for fostering partnerships and ensuring people with disabilities feel supported and connected.
Options Day: A Celebration of Inclusion
One of the AAA’s standout achievements is Options Day, an annual event that celebrates inclusivity and showcases the resources available to people with disabilities.
“It’s more than just an event,” Christy shared. “It’s about making people feel safe, supported, and included in the community. Seeing participants connect, smile, and engage makes all the work worth it.”
The event features interactive activities such as karaoke, a sensory zone, and opportunities to connect with local providers and community groups. By bringing together businesses, organisations, and participants, Options Day highlights the power of collaboration in creating a more inclusive Bundaberg.
Driving Change for a More Inclusive Future
Christy is a passionate advocate for making Bundaberg a fully inclusive community. From improving infrastructure to educating businesses and organisations about accessibility, she envisions a future where everyone feels empowered and supported.
“Something as simple as ensuring pathways are connected can make a huge difference,” she noted. “We need to work together to create a community where everyone feels empowered and supported.”
