At Welcome to Bundaberg, we are fortunate to work alongside dedicated organisations like Pierson Services, which has been supporting families and young people in our community for over 30 years. In a recent podcast episode, we spoke with Craig Lear, the Manager of Pierson Services, to learn more about their innovative programs and the impact of collaboration on Bundaberg.
A Unique Model: Growing for the Community
Pierson Services operates with a unique funding model powered by a farm donated by the Pierson sisters 77 years ago. The farm, which produces avocados and macadamias, not only supports their services financially but also provides job opportunities and hands-on programs for young people in the region. Craig emphasised the importance of this model, saying, “We focus on supporting the whole system that young people grow up in. By strengthening family connections, we see individuals thrive, even in challenging situations.”
Programs and Projects Making an Impact
Pierson Services offers a wide range of programs, including:
• Individual and Family Counseling – Providing professional support to help families navigate challenges.
• Coach Community Mentoring – Pairing mentors with families to achieve life goals.
• Youth Justice Programs – Helping young people gain qualifications and break cycles through programs like Transition to Success.
• EmpowHer Girls Group – Preparing Grade 4-6 girls for high school with confidence and relationship-building skills.
• Tough Masters Boys Program – Early intervention for young boys to improve social skills and prevent future challenges.
• Integrated Pathways at Kepnock (IPAC) – Exposing students to career opportunities and life skills through hands-on work experiences.
The centre also runs trauma-informed parenting programs, such as Bringing Up Great Kids, to empower parents and improve family dynamics.
Collaboration: The Key to Success
Craig highlighted that none of these programs operate in isolation. Partnerships with schools, councils, businesses, and other community organisations are central to Pierson Services’ approach. “We believe in working together to empower people to take responsibility for their future. By aligning our values and sharing resources, we can achieve so much more for the community,” Craig said.
The IPAC Program: A Collaboration Success Story
One of the standout initiatives is the Integrated Pathways at Kepnock (IPAC) program. Now in its third year, IPAC connects Pierson Services, Kepnock State High School, Bundaberg Regional Council, and local businesses to provide students with hands-on career experiences. Originally focused on agriculture, the program has expanded to offer broader career pathways. Students gain skills, build confidence, and develop a sense of purpose, with some employers ready to hire participants as young as 15.
“This program gives students hope and shows them what’s possible,” Craig explained. “It’s exciting to see the ripple effects this kind of initiative can have on families and the broader community.”
The Working Together Commitment
Craig also spoke about the Working Together Commitment, a collaborative framework designed to unite community services in Bundaberg. The initiative encourages sharing resources, having honest conversations, and supporting families in a cohesive way. “This commitment reminds us that we’re all in this together,” Craig said. “By caring for one another as professionals, we can better care for the community.”
Looking to the Future
As Pierson Services continues to grow and evolve, Craig is optimistic about what’s next. “We’re blessed to be in a place where we can support families and young people. By working together, we’re building a stronger, more connected Bundaberg.”
